About Specialty Programmable Logic Devices
Specialty programmable logic devices are specialty or proprietary products and accessories related to programmable logic devices (PLD). Programmable logic devices provide specific functions, such as device-to-device interfacing, data communication, signal processing, data display, timing and control operations, and practically any other function that a system must perform.
A programmable logic device is usually made available as a standard, off-the-shelf part suitable for a variety of customers. PLDs offer a wide range of logic capacity, features, speed, and voltage characteristics. These devices can be changed at any time to perform many diferent functions. The popularity and demand for programmable logic devices is due mainly to the ability of PLDs to to gather up functions that might otherwise be spread over a number of discrete logic devices and memory chips. Consequently, the use of PLDs improves end-system size, power consumption, performance, reliability, and cost. A device driver program interface that allows multiple protocols to share the same network hardware is called a network device interface. These types of programmable logic devices are suitable for such protocols as TCP/IP and Internetwork Packet eXchange (IPX) used on the same network interface card.
