Digital Parallel and Serial Converters

About Digital Parallel and Serial Converters

Digital parallel and serial converters change input streams of parallel data into output streams of serial bits, or vice versa. A digital parallel converter converts data in parallel form into a serial sequence of bits that are at same frequency. A serial converter is an interfacing device that is used to interconnect two serial standards such as USB to RS232. There are many different types of digital parallel converters and serial converters. Examples include a parallel to serial converter, serial to parallel converter, and an analog to digital converter (ADC).

Digital parallel and serial converters achieve parallel to serial conversion with a parallel to serial IC, usually an 8-pin device which works on 5 volts. Parallel to serial conversion is the process of converting the simultaneously received data stream into transmitting one bit at a time. A serial to parallel converter converts the serially received data into multiple data elements that are transmitted simultaneously. It uses a serial parallel adapter and serial to parallel adapter cable to carry out this process. An analog to digital converter samples the analog signals and then converts them into digital form to represent signal of computer processor. Other digital parallel and serial converters are commonly available.
