Specialty Transistors

Specialty transistors are specialty or proprietary products and accessories related to transistors. There are two basic types of specialty transistors: NPN transistors and PNP transistors. An NPN transistor is a two-junction semiconductor transistor or bipolar transistor with an n-type collector, an emitter, and a p-type base. It uses p-type material between two regions of n-type material. A PNP transistor is a two-junction transistor with a p-type collector, an emitter, and an n-type base, which uses n-type semiconductor material between two regions of p-type material. Both NPN and PNP transistors are a type of power transistor used for low audio (noise) or general-purpose applications.

Specialty transistors, such as the MOSFET transistor, are devices that control a current between two contacts using a voltage gate. A metal oxide silicon field effect transistor (MOSFET) is similar to a field effect transistor or FET transistor, but contains a further layer of insulation on the gate to reduce the current flowing into the gate to almost zero. MOSFET transistors are specialty transistors that are often used to provide thermal stability in power amplifiers. An IGBT transistor combines MOSFET gate drive attributes with bipolar transistor high current and low saturation voltage capabilities. The insulated (or isolated) gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) transistor is typically used with power supply switching and motor control applications.

A bipolar junction transistor consists of a pair of PN junction diodes joined back-to-back to form a sandwich of semiconductors, where one semiconductor is placed between two others. NPN and PNP transistors are bipolar junction types of specialty transistors. A RF transistor is a radio frequency transistor. RF transistors are specialty transistors that can be designed to serve as radio frequency front-ends for analog and digital wireless communication systems, such as cordless phones, pagers, wireless network equipment, TV and satellite tuners, GPS systems, and high-frequency oscillators.
